After just two free transfer signings before the last day of the window, Arsenal went out and smashed their transfer record in the hours before it closed to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
The Gunners paid in excess of £40million for the Germany international after signing goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on loan from Palermo earlier in the day.
